The
Charles
F.
Fernandez
Center
for Alternative Learning, opened its doors in 1988 to provide education for those students who were "falling through the cracks" in the large-school environment at SPASH. The goal of the Center was to avoid the harm to students, school system and community, caused by educational floundering and premature dropouts. In fact, school administrators estimate that, without the programming available through the
Fernandez
Center,
the district would experience a dropout rate of 15%.
Since 1988, the staff of the
Charles
F.
Fernandez
Center
for Alternative Learning, has provided instruction and help to nearly 3,000 students. The program is currently housed in the
Professional
Building
on Clark Street in the

The Stevens Point Journal first began in 1870 as a weekly known as "The Point." Owner Eaton B. Northrup changed the name to Journal in 1872, but the paper went broke in that same year.
Edward McGlachlin bought the enterprise and revived the paper in 1873. The Journal went daily in 1895. Another change came in 1919, when the Journal merged with the weekly Gazette under the newly-formed Journal Printing Co.
In September 1997, Journal Printing Co. sold the Stevens Point Journal to Thomson Newspapers. Gannett Co., the current owner, purchased the Stevens Point Journal in July 2000.
