The Charles F. Fernandez Center for Alternative Learning, opened its doors in 1988 to provide education for those students who were "falling through the cracks" in the large-school environment at SPASH.   The goal of the Center was to avoid the harm to students, school system and community, caused by educational floundering and premature dropouts. In fact, school administrators estimate that, without the programming available through the Fernandez Center, the district would experience a dropout rate of 15%.

Since 1988, the staff of the Charles F. Fernandez Center for Alternative Learning, has provided instruction and help to nearly 3,000 students.  The program is currently housed in the Professional Building on Clark Street in the Stevens Point business district. Visitors are welcome!

Purpose: To inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy

Mission:  Junior Achievement will ensure that every child in Wisconsin has an opportunity to obtain an understanding of the free enterprise system

About Us: Factory workers and community leaders, bank tellers, engineers, top executives and small business owners, all are stepping into classrooms. In cities, suburbs, throughout the rural communities in Wisconsin, and around the world, these volunteers change students' lives as Junior Achievement volunteers. Since 1941, Wisconsin students in kindergarten through 12th grade have been brought face to face with volunteers who have opened their eyes to business and economics through Junior Achievement.  The Portage & Wood Counties District has been around for 20 years.
Thanks to a growing number of contributors, volunteers, and educators, 4,000 Portage & Wood County students benefited from Junior Achievement last year. We rely on the participation of community volunteers. Because of volunteers, students across the state are learning and achieving. And to us, there is nothing more inspiring.
